A newcomer to acting, Katie Holmes has landed a number of roles for film and T.V. after only a few auditions.
Holmes started acting in small theatre productions in high school, but she didn't think she had a shot at stardom because she lived in the Midwest. She was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio. She was attending a model and talent convention in New York City, when she met a talent manager who encouraged her to come to Los Angeles and audition for a role in television.
At her first professional audition, Holmes amazed the casting director of the acclaimed feature film "The Ice Storm." Directed by Ang Lee ("Sense and Sensibility"). The Fox/Searchlight release won the Cannes Film Festival award for screenplay. "Ice Storm" starred Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver, Elijah Wood and Joan Allen. The film was about the sexual revolution of the 1970s. Holmes played the love interest of Toby Maguire (Elijah Wood).
During her senior year of high school, Holmes performed in her school's production of "Damn Yankees" as Lola. For the "Dawson's Creek" audition, she sent in a videotape from Toledo with her mom playing Dawson. The call back audition conflicted with her play's opening night, she declined so she wouldn't let down her school. The producers of Dawson's Creek were able to reschedule her audition and she landed the role of Joey Potter as a series regular.
Katie Holmes is currently starring along with James Marsden and Nick Stahl in the thriller "Disturbing Behaviour."
